Weekend Recap

Well, that was quite a whirlwind weekend! Here a few of my favorite pictures:

On Saturday, my friend Courtney flew into town and we went straight to the UofA/UCLA football game to cheer on our beloved Wildcats. Here we are tailgating on the golf course that surrounds the Rose Bowl with another UofA friend. She, however went there for grad school so her loyalty lies with her undergraduate school, UCLA. That's ok, we still like her anyway. : ) Oh, UofA did win this game by the way.











On Saturday night, I dressed up as Betty Boop. I can't believe that pretty much everyone guessed it from the clues I gave in Can You Guess My Costume. Courtney was a fabulous peacock! Isn't her costume amazing?! However, my absolute favorite costume of the night was this girl dressed as a shower loofah! She even had a bubble gun with her! I loved it! And nope, I didn't know her but that never stops me on Halloween. : )













Then on Sunday night, I decided to switch it up and I was a blue crayon. Isn't my costume awesome?! I had no intention of wearing something else but Courtney and I stumbled upon a huge Halloween store near my home and we just had to go inside and check it out. Right away, I noticed this fun costume and just had to get it. Then, of course what blue crayons do you know with bright pink hair? None! So, I had to be different. My roomie Gina went out with us this night and she was such a cute 'Little Red Riding Hood'. We met these two Ghostbusters while we were out and just had to get a picture with them.















So, how was your weekend? Were your costumes a success? Or did you decide to not partake in any of that this year? I can't say that I'll ever be over Halloween and wearing costumes. I just enjoy all of that way too much.

Last Year's Halloween

For this week's Mama Kat's Writing Workshop, I selected to answer prompt #4.) "Link up and show us something you've created for Halloween, anything qualifies...costumes, recipes, crafts,
party invites, treats, decorations etc."

So, here I am last year as the infamous LADY GAGA with my friend Dave who was friendly lion.

I am particularly proud of that costume. It was the first time in awhile that I didn't just go and buy an already pre-made outfit. Yep, I actually went out and bought all the separate pieces and made the outift work altogether myself.

I also loved the disco stick that I made. All I used to make it was a LED flashlight, a ton of rhinestones and two clear plastic cups. Super simple. Gotta love glue guns! : )

Can you guess my costume?

Wanna know what I'm dressing up as this year for Halloween?! Well, I'm not going to tell ya but I will give you some hints and I would love to know your guesses!
Here are the hints:

• big red lips
• big eyelashes

Pumpkin Carving and Divination

This evening my roomie Gina, her friend Danica and I carved pumpkins at our place. What Halloween season wouldn't be complete with a little carving pumpkin action? I wasn't really in the serious carving pumpkin mood so I just carved a little one that I got a couple weeks ago at a pumpkin farm. Sadly, it was too small to carve a face into it so instead, I cut out little hearts all over it.

So for our videos, we often look up information online and this time was no different, we looked up the history of Halloween. The following is something I learned but didn't bring up in the video:

"Some games traditionally played at Halloween are forms of divination. A traditional Scottish form of divining one's future spouse is to carve an apple in one long strip, then toss the peel over one's shoulder. The peel is believed to land in the shape of the first letter of the future spouse's name. Unmarried women were told that if they sat in a darkened room and gazed into a mirror on Halloween night, the face of their future husband would appear in the mirror. However, if they were destined to die before marriage, a skull would appear. The custom was widespread enough to be commemorated on greeting cards from the late 19th century and early 20th century."

Creepy, right?! Shall I try this on Halloween night this year? Hmmm.. Well, have you carved any pumpkins yet this year?

What to be for Halloween??

Ok, I'm starting to get a little annoyed that everyone already knows not only what they are going to be for Halloween but also what they are going to do next weekend. I still have not picked my outfit or decided with my friends what we are going to do. This is my first Halloween in LA so I want to go all out and really see what this city is like on one of my favorite holidays.

I don't know whether to be something cute, sexy, scary, funny, interesting or just plain dumb this year. I LOVE dressing up so I will definitely be in costume this Halloween. Got any ideas? I have a few but nothing is really sticking out to me yet. I even thought about being Lady Gaga again this year since I still have the outfit. But that's no fun, I want to be something new.... I also don't want to spend a ton of money so that narrows things down a little bit. Perhaps, I'll go online and see what those costume stores online have in stock. I do really hate waiting till the last minute to figure it out so I am hoping that I have my costume all planned out by this weekend.

Taking it back to the 50's and 60's!

Anyone that knows me, knows that I love dressing up. I love Halloween for that reason alone. I mean, come on, I was Lady Gaga last year, red bodysuit, disco stick and all! Theme parties are my absolute favorite. I've had the most fun at these kinds of parties. People really let loose and for one night, they can become someone else and really get into the mind of a different character.

My favorite Halloween ever was my senior year in college. My best girlfriends and I dressed up as each other for a night. It was hilarious! We all were bored with our costumes from the night before but didn't want to go out and spend money on another outfit. So we wrote each of our names down on a piece of paper and put them into a hat and one at a time, we drew names. We were all very creative and totally got into it, even imitating each other's personalities throughout the night. I'll never forget that fun night!

So anyway, after our wonderful dinner last night, Gina, Swati and I got all dressed up in late 50's and 60's style clothes for a Mad Men themed birthday party. The birthday girl was Rebekah, her parents taught with my parents overseas many years ago in Pakistan and then again in Myanmar. We got re-connected thanks to facebook and have been more in touch since I moved here. She lives not too far away in Santa Monica.

Well, the roomies and I seriously got into this theme. Because of Gina's project, Pin Ups for Vets, she has tons of wigs and accessories from different eras so I definitely took advantage and wore one of her great blonde wigs and an awesome red hat. I also wore short black gloves, had on bright red lipstick, a pearl necklace, clip on earrings and a black clutch purse. I had bought the dress earlier in the week at that vintage store. So, I was head to toe decked out in this decade. We looked fabulous!

We had a fun time at the party and then proceeded to go to a couple nearby bars after the party ended. We were quite entertaining wherever we went and got lots of stares but we didn't mind because we looked awesome! We even told a few people that we had just felt like dressing up and that there was no specific reason! : ) I look forward to more theme parties in our future!
